Make free voice and video calls with Skype, the world’s best instant messenger.

Skype is by far one of the most-used instant messaging apps on the planet – and with good reason! With this app you’ll be able to make free and cheap voice calls, enjoy group voice and video chats, sync contact lists across devices and so much more.

First things first: if you want to chat with friends and family across different devices and operating systems, Skype is your best bet for keeping in contact with everyone. It’ll work on Grandma’s Windows XP PC, it’ll work on your old Android phone running Ice Cream Sandwich, and it’ll even work on your friend’s iOS device (take your pick, it works on all of them).

The next best thing about the app is the easy and intuitive interface – if you can dial numbers on a phone, you can use this app. Want to enjoy voice and video calling with friends and family? Just click on the person’s name and then click on the little camera icon to make a call, it’s just that simple.

Adding new people to a voice or video call is just easy; you literally just click the plus-sign icon and you choose who you want to add. This button also allows you to “add” files, share contact information, call phones and more.

We love the ability to create contact lists and sync them across all your devices, helping you avoid the dreaded “Why do I have 12 numbers for Grandma when she’s only ever had one?” trap when upgrading your old phone to a new one.

It’s important to point out that while it’s easy to do just about all things communication with Skype, it has some shortcomings. You’ll have to buy minutes (or a subscription) to make calls to landlines and mobile phones, and SMS to mobiles cost too.

The app is ad-supported, and it can be really difficult to get the app to close on your phone. It works better on iOS devices for closing than it does on Android, this has been a common gripe among users for the last few years.

Aside from having to pay for some features and the app being a pain to close, Skype comes fairly close to providing a perfect chat experience on your phone or tablet (or Windows PC, or iOS, or Linux, or…) If you want a way to keep in touch with the people you care about, check it out!
